With the intention of getting Django up and running as quickly as possible on a VPS, you might be interested in exploring things like Turnkey Linux on a VPS - a one click pre-made installation of Django, running on a VPS of course.

Good to read your experiences in creating a site with a dedidcated server. Bookmarked. I also went through a similar selection process and settled on Pylons. Maybe worth a read :)

Good luck with your project. I went down the RoR road last year for a personal project (http://www.babynamemap.com) that runs on a 256M Slicehost VPS and have had no regrets. I think this year though, I'll be dusting off my Python coding skills that have been ignored for 4+ years now. With the rise of Django and Google's App Engine, Python is definitely worth another look. I look forward to seeing the results of your upcoming project.
