A Technology Agenda
Politicians of the world, please take notes. Many lessons can be learned from what The Obama team has already done right.
Take for example the technology agenda.
“President Obama and Vice President Biden understand the immense transformative power of technology and innovation and how they can improve the lives of Americans. They will work to ensure the full and free exchange of information through an open Internet and use technology to create a more transparent and connected democracy. They will encourage the deployment of modern communications infrastructure to improve America’s competitiveness and employ technology to solve our nation’s most pressing problems — including improving clean energy, healthcare costs, and public safety.”
I don’t see anything as lucid, transparent and detailed coming from Australias own confused leadership.
Conroys Doomed Filter
It’s well established that Senator Conroy’s Internet filter plan is technically in conflict with his other major policy, providing 12MBps Internet to the bush via a Government funded National Broadband Network.
Here, Iljitsch van Beijnum (Arstechnica) rather eloquently describes how the Australian Internet filter plan actually misses it’s policy target by a rather embarrassing margin.
“Here’s an idea: if the Australian government actually finds child porn, nuclear bomb making manuals, and the like on the Internet, why not do their best to find the perpetrators and put them behind bars? That way we get to keep our free speech and have less crime and terrorism, rather than less of the former without actually reducing the latter. Then again, imposing restrictions on what local taxpayers can do is a lot easier than tracking down and rounding up international criminals and terrorists, and the filtering plan is moving forward despite the massive and fairly obvious drawbacks.”
Disable Google SearchWiki for every International Google TLD
For the impatient: Download Disable SearchWiki for any TLD. (Requires Greasemonkey)
I am surprised and mildly disappointed by Google’s recent departure from their simple uncluttered interface with the launch of SearchWiki.
There are several scripts available which disable it for google.com and google.co.uk, but what about google.com.au, .co.hk and all the other top level domains (list)?
I’ve modified GoogleSystems script to work for any TLD.
Install: Disable SearchWiki for any TLD. (Requires Greasemonkey)
Book meme
There seems to be a book meme traveling through the Python community at the moment.
What you have to do is, “Grab the nearest book, turn to page 56, and post the fifth sentence to your blog.”
Here’s mine:
“You must make it very clear that this code is disposable, incomplete, and unable to be completed.”
– from: The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt & David Thomas.
The chapter is called, “Prototypes and Post-It notes”.
This book has been on my desk for months. I kinda stalled during chapter one to read other more exciting books. I will read this book one day, it is brilliant.
David Rose TED Talk
The astute may have noticed that I’ve been quiet on the tech entrepreneur front lately. This is because my solo project is currently on hold. The most challenging part of bootstrapping is doing it alone. It’s a long journey and it’s a lot more fun and perhaps a bit easier when you have a co-founder.
When a friend approached me a few months ago with a new idea for a new kind of enterprise social software I was a little skeptical at first, particularly because I didn’t want to stop working on what I was working on.
However after a good amount of research and prototyping, I am now totally convinced that we have an exciting and unique proposition for medium and large companies. I believe it’s software that many will believe they need even though they haven’t yet seen it.
I love TED talks, and this one from David Rose on pitching to VCs is brilliant.
Enjoy.
